Thirty-Six

Jess Moore couldn't believe her luck. She sat back, letting the soft cushions of her plush couch envelop her. Perhaps things were looking up. A fan and wealthy owner of a big South American company had donated a substantial amount of the money to Wessex Celtic with no desire to purchase any shares or become a board member. The donation was a gesture of love for the game and appreciation for the work Andrew Moore had done to bring Wessex Celtic back to the upper echelons of the English football league.

The donor sent a brief but appreciative email, and Jess immediately phoned her father with the good news. The relief in his voice was palpable. The club was teetering on the edge of bankruptcy, and the cash injection would allow them to pay the players at the end of the month and keep a few creditors at bay. It was the breathing space they needed, the lifeline Jess had been searching for. It was a weight lifted off her shoulders, a chink of light after weeks of fear and stress.

Andrew Moore had finally agreed to get away from the country until the trouble with Phoenix was resolved. At first, her dad railed against travelling abroad.

“I won’t let gangsters drive me out of my own country!” Andrew had said. But the stress became too much, and when his blood pressure increased beyond safe levels and Andrew’s doctor recommended rest, he relented and was currently in Portugal resting at a friend’s villa.

Jess checked her phone; it was seven o’clock in the evening and she wondered if Jack would call over. He’d left early that morning whilst she was asleep, and with the lucky donation, she hoped Jack could round off a good day with news that the problems with Phoenix were over. For the first time in a long while, the financial spreadsheet had green cells instead of red, and Jess closed the laptop with a smile. She went to the kitchen and opened her silver American fridge to see what was there for dinner. Jess thought she might cook for Jack. She had pasta, chicken and some pesto somewhere. The only problem was that she did not know when he might turn up—that’s if he came at all. There was no way of contacting him because Jack changed his phone after every phone call, which was both annoying and frustrating.

She supposed it came with the territory. Kane was secretive and reluctant to talk about his past. His body was a patchwork of scar tissue, with fresh, lurid wounds on his hip. All he would say was that he was once in the army, and then did some work for the government. That was it. He closed up whenever she tried to probe him further, so Jess left it alone, instead talking to him about her own history, which he listened to patiently and attentively. Maybe the mysterious allure was part of why she felt so attracted to him. It was a cliche, she knew, but Jess allowed herself to enjoy it.
